Drivers traveling along Prefumo Canyon Road should plan for extra time as San Luis Obispo County Public Works conducts major road repairs that could delay commutes through November 4.
The county's Public Works Department began repairs on August 4 as part of their ongoing storm recovery program.
"As you may know, the 2023 storms caused a lot of damage in the area, which experienced partial lane loss. That's why these repairs are necessary," said Shelly Cone, Public Information Officer for San Luis Obispo County Public Works.
Images shared by the Public Works Department showcase damage the road sustained in 2023. According to Cone, repairs are designed to reinforce the side of the roadway that was washed away.
Construction will take place during weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Some community members who use the road say the delays have been manageable so far.
"It was pretty seamless. I just had to stop for ten minutes, pull out a book and just read. So it wasn't like, too big of an inconvenience," said local resident Caedmon Krabill.
Public Works officials say drivers should expect delays of up to 30 minutes and are advising people to either take an alternate route or plan ahead.
"We just want people to be safe going through there, as there will be heavy trucks hauling big loads going to and from the location," Cone said.
The repairs will continue through November 4.
