Jim Castillo

Meteorologist

Meteorologist Jim Castillo delivers the evening weather forecast on KSBY News at 4, 5, 6, 10, and 11 p.m., Monday through Friday.

He is a member of the American Meteorological Society and holds its highest seal of approval, the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation.

Jim’s passion for weather began at an early age. On April 7, 1980, a powerful tornado struck his St. Louis, Missouri, neighborhood while he was in junior high school. After the storm, Jim vividly remembers seeing blades of grass embedded in the paint of his family’s home, along with pink insulation blown in from nearby houses. While such an experience can be traumatic for many, Jim found it fascinating—and it sparked his lifelong pursuit of meteorology.

He began his career while still in college, interning with the National Weather Service in Jefferson City, Missouri, and later in the weather department at KOMU-TV in Columbia, Missouri. Those internships led to his first on-air position as a weather anchor at KOMU-TV, where he earned the nickname “Beefcake.”

Jim graduated from the University of Missouri–Columbia with a degree in Atmospheric Science and also spent three years as a cheerleader for the Tigers’ basketball and football teams.

Since college, Jim has worked in several of the nation’s largest television markets, including Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and Seattle. He spent more than a decade on the West Coast, gaining extensive experience covering a wide range of weather patterns and major storms.

Friends and family will tell you that California—particularly the Central Coast—is the part of the country Jim loves most.

Throughout his career, Jim has earned numerous honors, including multiple Emmy Awards, his first for Best Weather in the Pacific Northwest, a Golden Mic Award, and participation on a large-market team that won an Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence.

In addition to meteorology, Jim has appeared in several television and film projects, including Criminal Minds, Million Dollar Arm, Photo Booth, Duplex, With Honors, Blink, Leap of Faith, and Torchwood. He also served as a judge on America’s Next Weatherman. Jim is a vested member of the SAG-AFTRA union.
