Man hit and killed by train in Paso Robles identified

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department has identified the man hit and killed by a train in Paso Robles as Bryan Brady, 21.

Investigators believe Brady was laying on the tracks when he was hit around 6:30a.m. Saturday morning.

It's still unclear why he was laying on the tracks.

Classic car show rolls into Arroyo Grande

Hundreds of people were revving their engines for the 21st annual Arroyo Valley Car Show.

Classic cars dating from 1910 to the 1990s lined the streets of downtown Arroyo Grande.

People strolled the show to take a peek at some vehicles they have not seen since their childhood, and as one showgoer noted, it was not just the cars providing entertainment.

Jr. Livestock Auction takes over the Mid-State Fair

The weather was perfect for a day at the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles, and that is where dozens of kids spent their time showing off months of hard work.

The 2010 Junior Livestock Auction took place Saturday, and while the bidding fun only lasts a few minutes, 4-H members say the lessons last a lifetime.

Feeding, washing, and keeping cool, those are just a few of the responsibilities 4-H member Brianna Soto had to tackle to make it to the livestock auction.

Two customers robbed at gunpoint in Santa Maria store

Two people were robbed at gunpoint in Santa Maria Friday morning.

It happened in the 1200 block of North Broadway just after 9:00a.m. It's unclear what store the customers were in. A suspect dressed in jeans, with a red sweatshirt and red bandana around his face pulled a gun on Maria Velez, 42, and Floriberto Aguilan, 26, and demanded money. He didn't rob the store, but did get away with around $370 of the victim's cash.

Young Paso Robles man struck and killed by train

Union Pacific Railroad and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Coroner are investigating the death of a 20-year-old Paso Robles resident, struck and killed by a train early Saturday morning.

It happened at the railroad crossing near 12th Street around 6:30 a.m. A Paso Robles Police Department spokesperson says the man was found laying between the tracks. His name is not being released, pending notification of family.

Crews beat back wildfire in desert north of LA

PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) - Fire crews working through the night
beat back flames and built containment lines around a two-day old wildfire that has charred nearly 22 square miles of brush in the high desert north of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Sam Padilla says the blaze is 62 percent contained Saturday morning.

Several rounds fired, one person shot in Santa Maria

Officers are investigating what prompted a suspect to fire several rounds at an 18-year-old Santa Maria man late Friday night.

It happened in the 500 block of West Taylor just before midnight. The victim was shot in the hand and taken to Marian Medical Center for surgery. It's unclear what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting, and because of conflicting witness statements, officers don't know at this time if the incident was gang related.

Local teen inspiring others at the Mid-State Fair

Day ten of the California Mid-State Fair is wrapping up Friday night and that is bittersweet for many of the students taking part in this year's events.

However for one local 17-year-old girl this year's fair has been about much more than pageant crowns and 4-H ribbons.

It is about overcoming obstacles and inspiring others to do the same.

Former Padre and MVP pleads not guilty to assault

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (AP) - Kevin Mitchell, a former Padre and the National League's MVP in 1989, has pleaded not guilty to felony charges that he assaulted a man last week at a golf club.

Prosecutors say Mitchell was arraigned Thursday in Chula Vista Superior Court on charges of battery and assault.

The 48-year-old was arrested July 21 at the Bonita Golf Club and released on $25,000 bail the next day.

Feds block Schwarzenegger's plan to sell EdFund

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Federal officials are blocking Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's plan to sell the state's student loan guarantee operation to help fill California's deficit.

Schwarzenegger had hoped to sell the nonprofit EdFund for as much as $1 billion to help fill the state's $19 billion hole.

But in a letter obtained Friday, the U.S. Department of Education says the federal government plans to terminate its agreement with the state to run EdFund by October.

21st Squadron transfers to Vandenberg

The closure of an air force station in the bay area has brought some of its staff to a new facility at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

25 positions have been transferred from that unit to a brand new Satellite Operations Facility at Vandenberg. The air force base held a dedication ceremony this morning. The building is named for Ellison Onizuka, an air force astronaut killed when the Challenger exploded in 1986.

Allen Settle announces he will not run for Mayor

A longtime San Luis Obispo City Councilmember has announced he will not run for mayor in the upcoming general election.

Allen Settle has served more than 30 years on the city council, including four terms as mayor.

He is being termed out of his city council seat this year so he is only eligible to run for mayor.

However, he is instead throwing his support behind Councilwoman Jan Marx.
